With more color and texture combinations than any automaker on the planet, Bentley Motors (under the Volkswagen Auto Group) released the Bentley Continental GT after appearances at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the annual Bentley Drivers Club meeting in Silverstone. Marketed as a hand built grand tourer, the Bentley Continental GT is the first Bentley Motors product to employ mass-production techniques.

Influenced by the Rolls-Royce Java Concept, introduced in 1994, the coach-built Bentley Continental GT was designed to provide consumers with a more economic alternative to the expensive Continental R ($225K). Larger production volume would allow the Bentley Continental GT to sell for approximately half the price of the Continental R.

Gen I Bentley Continental GT

The Gen I Bentley Continental GT was equipped with a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine, capable of generating 552hp at 6,100 RPM and 479 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 and 6,100 RPM. With its standard equipment Torsen-based all-time all-wheel drivetrain, the first-generation Bentley Continental GT could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8-seconds and it had a top speed of 197.6 mph. Gen I Bentley Continental GT production ran from 2003 through 2011.

Making its debut during the 2012 North American Auto Show, the Gen II Bentley Continental GT was a V8 powered version of the Gen I Continental GT. It was powered by a 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 engine, developed in conjunction with Audi. Maximum output was estimated to be 500hp and 487 lb.-ft. of torque. The Bentley Continental GT V8 also made appearances at the 2012 Beijing International Auto Exhibition, the SkyLounge in Munich, Germany and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Gen II Continental GT Bentleys

Other Gen II Continental models included the Continental GT W12 (2011–2018), the Continental GT V8 (2012–2018), the Continental GTC W12 (2011–2018), the Continental GT Speed Coupe (2012–2018), the Continental GTC V8 (2012–2018), the Continental GTZ (2012), the Continental GT Speed Convertible (2013–2018), the Continental GT Le Mans Edition (2013–) and the Continental GT V8 S (2014–2018).

The Bentley Continental GT Speed Coupe increased output to 616hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque using a 6.0-liter twin turbo W12 engine. The Speed Coupe also featured an upgraded chassis and suspension with a lowered center of gravity. Top speed was 205 mph and the Bentley Continental GT Speed Coupe could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 4.0-seconds.

Made available as either a coupe or a convertible, the Bentley Continental GT V8 S was an improvement over the previous V8 version. The 4.0-liter twin turbocharged motor could now churn out 521hp at 6,000 RPM and 502 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,700 RPM. Other upgrades included a less restrictive sports exhaust system, specially designed 20-inch wheels, as well as a more aerodynamic front splitter and gloss black rear diffuser. The suspension system was also lowered slightly.

Drawing huge crowds at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Gen III Bentley Continental GT was the first production automobile to make extensive use of an innovative form of sheet metal processing called Superforming. Made from aluminum, the entire body side panels of the Gen III Bentley Continental GT are formed by heating the metal to more than 500-degrees and molding it using pressurized gas. This technique, developed for use in fighter jets, delivers a smoother surface structure with sleeker and more defined lines throughout. Built on the same (Volkswagen MSB) platform as the Porsche Panamera, the 100th Anniversary version of the Bentley Continental GT had a top speed of 207 mph and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.6-seconds. The 6.0-liter W12 delivers 626hp and 664 lb.-ft. of torque. Direct fuel injection and a variable displacement cylinder deactivation system help to keep exhaust emissions to a minimum.
