The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4-Series introduced for the 2014 model year. A product of BMW’s Motorsports Division, coupe (F82) and convertible (F83) versions of the BMW M4 remain in production at the time of this writing in 2020. Tri-color M (Motorsport) accents (interior and exterior), carbon-fiber body panels, improved aerodynamic capability, a more capable suspension, better brakes, and a more responsive twin-turbocharged engine set the BMW M4 apart from standard BMW 4-Series vehicles.
BMW M4 Coupe and Convertible (2014-present)
Introduced in late 2013 (for the 2014 model year), the BMW M4 F82 and BMW M4 F83 are powered by a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with a redline of 7,600 RPM. A pair of mono-scroll turbochargers with 18.1 psi of peak boost pressure, provide forced air induction for the BMW M4. The maximum output capacity for the BMW M4 is 425hp and 406 lb.-ft. of torque. Transmission options included either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed M-DCT (dual-clutch) automatic. Equipped with the 7-speed M-DCT, the BMW M4 could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.1-seconds.
In 2016, a pair of additional BMW M4 variants were introduced. The first, the BMW M4 Competition, boasted improved suspension with stiffer springs, new anti-roll bars, and adaptive M Suspension. A re-tuned electronic rear differential and electronic stability control took the guesswork out of hugging the corners. The twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine was tuned to produce 450hp. The BMW M4 Competition could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.0-seconds with the automatic transmission.
BMW M4 GTS
The BMW M4 GTS – revealed as a concept vehicle during the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – was a track-focused version of the BMW M4. Maximum power output was increased to 450hp. A rarely used water injection system helped to make the gains in horsepower possible for the BMW M4 GTS which could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8-seconds and had a top speed of 190 mph.
