Based on the BMW CLAR platform, the BMW M8 Convertible (F91) is the latest drop-top iteration of the vaunted BMW M-Sport Division. A high-performance version of the BMW 8-Series, the BMW M8 Convertible was first introduced as a prototype in June 2017, but finally made its production debut (online) in June 2019. Actual production of the BMW M8 Convertible began in August 2019 and continues at the time of this writing in 2020.
With a powertrain that is loosely based on that of the BMW M8 GTE race car, the BMW M8 Convertible is powered by a twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 capable of producing 591hp and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. The BMW M8 Convertible is rear-wheel drive with an 8-speed M-Steptronic (automatic) transmission and an electronically controlled rear differential. In independent testing by Car and Driver Magazine, the BMW M8 Convertible accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3-seconds.
All-wheel drive, an enhanced induction system, stiffer engine mounts and increased engine power help to make the BMW M8 Convertible Competition the upper crust of the MW M8 Convertible lineup. The 4.4-liter twin turbo engine is tuned to produce 617hp in the BMW M8 Convertible Competition which can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2-seconds and has an electronically controlled top speed of 155 mph (190 mph with the BMW M-Driver’s Package). The BMW x-Drive all-wheel drive system can be configured to function in all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive modes.
