As successor to the fastest production vehicle in the world, the Bugatti Chiron was expected to reach lofty heights. It has not disappointed. During the 2017 IAA show in Frankfurt, Germany, the Bugatti Chiron (piloted by Colombian race drive Juan Pablo Montoya) broke the world record time for a vehicle to accelerate from a standstill to 400 km/h (249 mph) and safely return to a halt. This is called the 0-400-0. The Bugatti Chiron completed the task in a timespan of 41.96-seconds and a distance of 2-miles. The French automaker also noted that, during the world record attempt, the Chiron accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in 2.4-seconds, from 0 to 124 mph in 6.1-seconds, from 0 to 186 mph in 13.1-seconds and from 0 to 248.5 in 32.6-seconds – actually making the Bugatti Chiron faster than the Bugatti Veyron.
If that wasn’t enough, Bugatti race driver Andy Wallace drove a pre-production Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ to a record-breaking top speed of 304.7 mph. This was accomplished on August 2, 2019 at the Volkswagen Test Facility in Ehra-Lessien, Germany. Results were verified by the TUV, Germany’s Technical Inspection Association. The Bugatti Chiron is the first production automobile to surpass the 300 mph barrier.
History Of The Bugatti Chiron
First introduced during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Bugatti Chiron is a mid-engine, two-seater sports car with a Haldex all-wheel drivetrain. The Bugatti Chiron is based on the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo Concept Car. The Chiron name comes from Gran Prix racer Louis Chiron. Chiron hails from Monaco on the French Riviera. The Bugatti Chiron began production in 2016 and remains in production at the date of this article. Key variants to the Bugatti Chiron include the Bugatti Chiron Sport (2018-present), the 110 Ans Bugatti (2019-present), the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport (2020-present).
Much like the Bugatti Veyron, the Bugatti Chiron utilizes a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque body-shell and independent suspension. The massive quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 engine has been upgraded to produce 1,479hp at 6,700 RPM and 1,180 lb.-ft of torque from 2,000 to 6,000 RPM. That’s about 300hp more than the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.
