In 2004 the handcrafted AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 hit the scene. Rocking a sleek body with deeply etched lines, the rear-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG quickly emerged as one of the premier sports cars on the planet. This tiny two-seater – with a 6.0-liter V12 engine – didn’t get the best fuel mileage but it was great at crushing the competition. The massive twin turbocharged engine could produce 612hp and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG was capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 4.2-seconds and had a top speed of 155 mph. This version of the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG remained in production until 2012 with only a minor facelift in 2008.
Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black (2008-2011)
Unveiled during the 2008 Monterey Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black (2008-2011) was the performance version of the SL 65 AMG lineup. The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black was equipped with the same biturbo 6.0-liter V12 engine; this time with larger turbos and enhanced wastegate piping. Intake and exhaust manifolds were also reconfigured for increased flow. The result was a gain in overall engine output. The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black could churn out 661hp and accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8-seconds. In addition to the turbo system upgrades, the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black was also 551-pounds lighter than the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG. This weight reduction was accomplished with carbon fiber body components as well as replacing the retractable hardtop with a fixed roof. Top speed for the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black was 200 mph.
Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG (2013-2016)
The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG went on a diet in 2013. Utilizing an all-aluminum bodyshell resulted in a weight reduction of approximately 375-pounds for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG. A redesigned front fascia with a twin blade grille shrouded the same AMG 6.0-liter twin turbocharged V12 engine. This time the big mill could produce 630hp and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. Top speed was 186 mph and the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2-seconds. This version of the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG was produced from 2013-2016.
