BUGATTI EB110

Before the Bugatti Veyron and the Bugatti Chiron, there was the Bugatti EB110. The name EB110 represents Ettore Bugatti’s initials and commemorates what would have been his 110th birthday. The Bugatti EB110 was unveiled in Versailles exactly 110-years after (Bugatti founder) Ettore Bugatti was born.

Bugatti EB110 History

Produced from 1991 through 1995, the mid-engine powered Bugatti EB110 shares many design concepts with Lamborghini, Ferrari and Lancia. This was due to the input of different Italian engineers throughout the development of the Bugatti EB110. The original design that began with Marcello Gandini in 1988 was passed off to Giampaolo Benedini after Gandini resisted suggestions from Bugatti front office brass to change the design. Innovative features like a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, all-wheel drivetrain and active aerodynamics came courtesy of Paolo Stanzani, an ex-employee of Lamborghini, and Nicola Materazzi who had experience with Lancia and Ferrari. Gandini’s scissor doors and glass engine cover made it into the final design despite his noted absence from the final stages of development.

As futuristic as the Bugatti EB110 seemed, the real marvel of this car was the engine. It was a 3.5-liter quad-turbo V12 that used 60 valves and a dozen individual throttle bodies to generate a maximum output of 553hp at 8,000 RPM and 451 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,750 RPM. The Bugatti EB110 GT had a top speed of 212.5 mph and could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4-seconds – really impressive for its day.

Introduced during the 1992 Geneva Motor Show, the Bugatti EB110 Super Sport was 330-pounds lighter than the Bugatti EB 110 GT. This was accomplished with lightweight carbon fiber body panels – inside and out. The Bugatti EB110 Super Sport engine was tuned to produce 603hp at 8,250 RPM and 479 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM. It could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2-seconds and had a top speed of 221 mph.
