With a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive design and a carbon fiber monocoque, the McLaren P1 was thought by many in the automotive press to be a hybrid successor to the McLaren F1 and McLaren MP4-12C. The notable competition included the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918. All three cars completed a timed attack of the course around Silverstone Circuit within half-second of each other. Later, when the McLaren Speedtail was released in 2020, it was marked as the actual successor to the McLaren F1.
A true masterpiece of automotive performance, the McLaren P1 utilizes the combination of a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter internal combustion engine and an electric motor to produce 903hp and 723 lb.-ft. or torque. Uniquely, the electric motor in the McLaren P1 may be utilized manually (by the driver) or trusted to the engine controller, which will use it to eliminate turbo lag automatically. This form of power application serves to virtually eradicate hesitation upon acceleration – by one method or the other.
The plug-in hybrid McLaren P1 stores power for the electric motor in a 324-cell lithium-ion battery pack. Developed by Johnson Matthey Battery Systems, the battery for the McLaren P1 can be charged by the engine or by an auxiliary power source. If plugged into an alternate power source, the McLaren P1 may be fully charged in about two hours.
A mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive supercar, the McLaren P1 is equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
McLaren Tuning & Testing
During independent testing, the McLaren P1 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8-seconds. It also laid down the best quarter-mile pass of 10.2-seconds at 147.5 mph. The McLaren P1 weighs in at 3,411-pounds and came from the factory with an electronically controlled top speed of 217 mph.
Starting and stopping the McLaren P1 is made more efficient using an Akebono brake system with carbon-ceramic brake rotors and pads, as well as lightweight wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Corsa rubber.
